Fiverr suits defined deliverables you can order in minutes, with a 5.5% buyer fee plus $3.50 on orders under $200. Key takeaways

  • Fiverr charges buyers 5.5% plus a $3.50 small-order fee under $200; Upwork's pricing page lists a 5% marketplace fee on its Basic plan plus a $0.99 to $14.99 contract initiation fee.
  • On a $500 order the Fiverr fee is $27.50; Upwork's 5% would be $25 plus the initiation fee, so fees rarely decide it.
  • Fiverr sells priced packages you can order in minutes; Upwork starts with a job post and proposals.
  • Upwork's Business Plus plan (10% fee) unlocks Expert-Vetted talent it calls the top 1%; Fiverr Pro Essential is free and Pro Advanced costs $129 a month.
  • Choose Fiverr for a defined deliverable, Upwork for open-ended or long hourly work.

Short verdict: use Fiverr when you can describe the finished deliverable in a paragraph and want to start today. Use Upwork when you need a person for weeks of loosely defined or hourly work and are happy to review proposals first. On fees, the two are closer than most comparisons suggest.

What is the main difference between Fiverr and Upwork?

The main difference is who makes the first move. On Fiverr, sellers publish packages with a price, a delivery time and a revision count, and you order one. On Upwork, you post a job and freelancers send proposals, so the price and scope come out of a conversation.

That one difference drives most of what follows. Fiverr is faster to start and easier to compare because packages sit side by side. Upwork gives you more room to shape a job that does not fit a package, at the cost of time spent reading proposals and interviewing.

How much does Fiverr cost compared with Upwork?

On a typical first order the platform fees differ by a few dollars. Fiverr’s payments article sets the buyer service fee at 5.5% of the purchase plus $3.50 on orders under $200. An older Fiverr overview page still says $3.00 under $100, so Fiverr’s help pages currently show two versions. The full breakdown is on our Fiverr fees page.

Upwork’s client pricing page lists a 5% marketplace fee on the free Basic plan, dropping to 3% for eligible US clients who pay from a bank account. Upwork’s own help article describes the Basic fee as “up to 7.99%”, so check the figure at checkout. Upwork also charges a one-time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99 per new contract.

Order sizeFiverr fee (5.5% + $3.50 under $200)Upwork Basic at 5% (before initiation fee)
$100$9.00$5.00
$200$11.00$10.00
$500$27.50$25.00
$1,000$55.00$50.00
$2,000$110.00$100.00

Add Upwork’s initiation fee and the gap on a single $500 contract shrinks to a few dollars. If you use Upwork’s Business Plus plan to reach Expert-Vetted talent, the marketplace fee rises to 10%, which makes Fiverr the cheaper route at every order size.

Which one gets better quality?

Neither platform guarantees quality on its open marketplace, so your selection process matters more than the logo on the invoice. Both give you reviews, work history and level badges to filter on.

On Fiverr, the signals are the seller level (Level 1, Level 2, Top Rated), the Fiverr’s Choice badge and the Pro badge. Top Rated requires 40 orders, $10,000 earned and a manual review, according to Fiverr’s level rules. Fiverr Pro freelancers are vetted by Fiverr’s team before acceptance. Our guide on how to find good sellers on Fiverr covers how to read those signals.

On Upwork, the equivalents are Job Success Score, Top Rated badges and the Expert-Vetted tier, which Upwork’s pricing page describes as “the top 1% of Upwork talent” and ties to the Business Plus plan.

Choose Fiverr when

  • The job has a clear output: a logo, a 60-second edit, a Shopify theme setup, five blog posts.
  • You want to see the price and delivery time before talking to anyone.
  • The budget is under about $2,000 and you want to start the same day.
  • You want a vetted option without a paid plan: Fiverr Pro Essential is free to activate, per Fiverr’s help center (the plans page mentions eligibility based on $1,000 or more in annual spend).

If that sounds like your project, browse Fiverr by category and compare three packages side by side.

Choose Upwork when

  • You need a contractor for 10 to 40 hours a week over several months.
  • The scope is still forming and you want freelancers to propose an approach.
  • Your team already tracks contractor time and wants hourly billing to be the default.
  • You want to interview several candidates before anyone starts.

What about Fiverr Pro vs Upwork’s vetted talent?

For higher-stakes work, both platforms offer a vetted layer, and Fiverr’s is cheaper to reach. Fiverr Pro Essential costs nothing and includes a money-back guarantee on eligible Pro orders within 14 days of completion, according to Fiverr’s cancellations article. Pro Advanced adds a dedicated Business Success Manager and monthly invoicing for $129 a month.

Upwork’s Expert-Vetted talent comes with Business Plus, which is free to join but charges a 10% marketplace fee on payments. On a $5,000 project that is $500 in fees versus $275 on Fiverr. See Fiverr Pro vs Fiverr for when the Pro tier pays off, or go straight to Fiverr Pro if you already know you want vetted talent.

Our verdict

Fiverr wins on speed, price visibility and ease of a first order. Upwork wins on flexibility for hourly, ongoing and loosely scoped work. Fees are close enough that they should not decide it; the shape of the job should. If you are still weighing other options, our Fiverr alternatives page covers the rest of the field.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fiverr cheaper than Upwork?
For most first orders the platform fees land within a few dollars of each other. Fiverr's small-order fee makes orders under $200 slightly more expensive, while Upwork's contract initiation fee adds up to $14.99 per new contract. The bigger price difference comes from how sellers price: Fiverr packages are fixed and visible before you talk to anyone.
Which is faster for a small project?
Fiverr, usually. You pick a package, submit requirements and the order moves to In Progress. On Upwork you post a job, wait for proposals, interview and then fund a contract, which often takes a day or more before work begins.
Which platform is better for hourly work?
Upwork was built around hourly contracts and time tracking. Fiverr added hourly orders, which carry a $5 initiation fee, an 8-hour minimum and Monday billing, but most Fiverr buying still happens through fixed-price packages.
Can I use both?
Yes, and many businesses do. A common split is Fiverr for defined deliverables like a logo, a video edit or a landing page, and Upwork for a part-time contractor who works on your systems every week.
Do Fiverr and Upwork both protect buyers?
Both hold payment until work is delivered or approved, and both only protect you when you pay on the platform. Fiverr's help center is explicit that off-platform payments are a risk it cannot protect against.
Is Fiverr or Upwork better for hiring a web developer?
Fiverr is better for a defined build you can describe up front: in our September 29, 2026 check, well-reviewed WordPress and website development gigs started at a median $100 and Shopify setups at $120. Upwork is better for an evolving build with an unclear scope. On Fiverr, milestone orders and hourly orders cover larger jobs, so it is not limited to small fixes.
