Key takeaways

  • Contra says it is commission-free for freelancers; clients pay a flat platform fee of $2 to $29 per transaction depending on project size.
  • On Contra, clients also pay payment processing: 2.9% plus 30 cents on domestic cards or 0.8% capped at $5 by ACH.
  • On a $1,000 project, Contra costs a client $29 plus about $29.30 in card processing; Fiverr charges $55.
  • Contra job posts are free, with an optional $199 boost for 30 days.
  • Fiverr lists fixed packages with delivery days; across 37 well-reviewed Fiverr social media management gigs on September 29, 2026, the median start was $60.

Short verdict: Contra is attractive when you already know who you want to hire or have a large project where a capped fee saves real money. Fiverr is easier when you are starting from zero and want to compare fixed prices, delivery times and reviews in one place.

How does Contra differ from Fiverr?

Contra is a portfolio-first network where freelancers keep 100% of their rate; Fiverr is a marketplace of priced packages. On Contra you browse profiles, post a free job or contact a freelancer and agree scope together. On Fiverr you compare Basic, Standard and Premium packages and order one.

The money flows differently too. Contra says it is “always commission-free for all creatives” and charges clients a small flat fee plus processing. Fiverr charges buyers a percentage service fee that scales with the order.

How much do Fiverr and Contra charge buyers?

Contra’s client help center lists a flat platform fee that depends on project size and on whether the freelancer is a Contra Pro member: $2, $5, $10 or $29 per transaction for standard freelancers, and half that with Pro freelancers. On top, the client pays processing: 2.9% plus 30 cents on domestic cards, 0.8% capped at $5 by ACH or 0.5% plus 30 cents capped at $6 by SEPA.

Fiverr’s payments article sets the buyer fee at 5.5% plus $3.50 on orders under $200, with no separate processing line. Fiverr’s help pages currently show two versions of the small-order fee (an older page says $3.00 under $100). Our Fiverr fees page has a calculator.

Project sizeFiverr feeContra, standard freelancer, cardContra, standard freelancer, ACH
$100$9.00$2 + $3.20 = $5.20$2 + $0.80 = $2.80
$500$27.50$10 + $14.80 = $24.80$10 + $4.00 = $14.00
$1,000$55.00$29 + $29.30 = $58.30$29 + $5.00 = $34.00
$2,000$110.00$29 + $58.30 = $87.30$29 + $5.00 = $34.00

Card figures assume a single domestic card charge; international cards cost more. The pattern is simple: paying Contra by bank transfer is clearly cheaper on large projects, while card payments land close to Fiverr’s fee.

Which one is faster for a first hire?

Fiverr, for most buyers. Packages show exactly what you get, the order moves to In Progress when you submit requirements and seller levels (Level 1, Level 2, Top Rated) give you a quick trust filter. Across 37 well-reviewed social media management gigs on Fiverr on September 29, 2026, the median starting price was $60 with a 7-day median delivery on the starting package.

On Contra, the first hire involves more conversation: reviewing portfolios, agreeing scope and setting up the contract. That is fine for a long relationship and slower for a one-off task. Our guide on how to write a Fiverr brief works for both platforms.

Choose Fiverr when

  • You want fixed prices, delivery days and revision counts you can compare side by side.
  • You are buying a defined output: a brand kit, a landing page, a month of social posts.
  • You want a vetted tier: Fiverr Pro freelancers are evaluated before acceptance.
  • You want everything, including cancellations and refunds, handled in one system.

Browse Fiverr and compare three packages in your category.

Choose Contra when

  • You already know the freelancer and they prefer Contra.
  • The project is $1,000 or more and you can pay by ACH, keeping fees near $34.
  • You value portfolio-led discovery in design, product or no-code work.
  • The freelancer relationship will be ongoing and you want them to keep their full rate.

Does either platform offer more protection?

Fiverr’s protection is well documented: cancellations through the Resolution Center, late-order cancellation 24 hours after the due date and refunds to Fiverr Balance or, on request, to your original payment method within 10 days. Contra’s fee page does not cover dispute terms, so read its client terms before funding a large project.

Whatever platform you choose, keep payment on the platform. Fiverr’s help center warns that off-platform payment “exposes users to the risk of scams and fraudulent activity”. For more options, see Fiverr alternatives and Fiverr vs Upwork.

Frequently asked questions

Is Contra cheaper than Fiverr for buyers?
On larger projects, often yes. Contra caps its platform fee at $29 per transaction for standard freelancers, plus card or bank processing. Fiverr charges 5.5% of the order, which passes $29 once an order goes above about $530. On small orders the difference is a few dollars either way.
Why is Contra commission-free for freelancers?
Contra makes money from fees on clients, its Contra Pro subscription for freelancers ($29 a month or $199 a year) and optional job boosts. Fiverr instead charges buyers a percentage service fee on every order.
Is it harder to find someone on Contra?
It can be. Contra is built around portfolios and independent profiles, and you often post a job or reach out directly. Fiverr's packages, filters and seller levels make comparing options faster for a first-time buyer.
Which platform is better for designers and brand work?
Both have strong creative talent. Contra leans toward portfolio-led independents in design, product and no-code. Fiverr offers a wider price range, including a vetted Fiverr Pro tier and fixed brand identity packages.
