Fiverr vs an in-house hire in 2026: the real cost comparison

Short answer

Fiverr vs an in-house hire is a question of volume. A salaried employee makes sense for steady full-time work: BLS puts the median US graphic designer at $62,960 a year, and benefits add about 30% to employer costs. Fiverr makes sense for variable or specialist work: you pay per project, from a median $100 starting price for brand identity gigs we checked, plus a 5.5% fee, with no payroll or benefits.

Key takeaways

  • BLS puts the median US graphic designer at $62,960 a year ($30.27 an hour) as of May 2025.
  • Benefits made up 30.0% of private-industry employer compensation costs in June 2026, per BLS.
  • A designer earning the median wage costs roughly $89,900 a year once benefits are added at that share, about $7,500 a month.
  • Across 38 well-reviewed Fiverr brand identity gigs on September 29, 2026, the median starting price was $100; for flyers and print, $22.50.
  • Fiverr's buyer fee is 5.5% plus $3.50 under $200, so $2,000 of monthly Fiverr design orders costs $2,110.

Short verdict: use Fiverr while your need is part-time, variable or spread across several skills. Hire in-house once one skill fills most of a working week every week, and you want someone who builds knowledge of your brand and systems over time.

How much does an in-house hire really cost?

More than the salary. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) puts the median pay for graphic designers at $62,960 a year, or $30.27 an hour, as of May 2025. BLS employer cost data for June 2026 shows wages and salaries at 70.0% of private-industry employer compensation costs and benefits at 30.0%.

Applied to the median designer salary, that share of benefits takes total compensation to roughly $89,900 a year, or about $7,500 a month. That is before recruiting time, equipment, software licenses, management time and the weeks of ramp-up before a new hire is fully productive.

How much does the same work cost on Fiverr?

On Fiverr you pay per project. Across well-reviewed gigs on the first page of Fiverr’s categories on September 29, 2026, median starting prices were $100 for brand identity (38 gigs), $22.50 for flyers and print design (42 gigs), $70 for presentation design (42 gigs) and $80 for website design (40 gigs). These are starting prices of the cheapest package, not project totals.

Fiverr adds a buyer service fee: 5.5% of the order, plus $3.50 on orders under $200, per Fiverr’s payments article. An older Fiverr page still shows $3.00 under $100. US sales tax, GST or similar taxes can be added at checkout depending on where you are. See Fiverr fees.

Monthly design spendFiverr total with feesShare of an in-house designer at about $7,500 a month
$500$527.507%
$2,000$2,11028%
$5,000$5,27570%
$7,000$7,38598%

The table assumes orders of $200 or more, so no small-order fee. It ignores your time spent briefing freelancers and the time you would spend managing an employee, which roughly cancel out for most small teams.

What else changes besides cost?

Control and continuity change the most. An employee learns your brand, sits in your meetings and handles the 15-minute tweaks that never justify an order. A Fiverr freelancer delivers what the brief says, and each new request is a new order or custom offer.

Choose Fiverr when

  • Your need is variable: busy one month, quiet the next.
  • You need several skills (design, video, copy, code) but not a full week of any one.
  • You want to test a channel or format before committing payroll to it.
  • You need a specialist for a one-off job, such as packaging design or a pitch deck.

Start by repeating work with sellers who deliver well; it recovers much of the brand knowledge an employee would have. Browse Fiverr categories , or use Fiverr Pro for vetted freelancers on business-critical work.

Choose an in-house hire when

  • One skill fills 30 or more hours a week, every week.
  • The work depends on internal context: product details, customer data, fast approvals.
  • You are spending more than about $6,000 a month on the same kind of freelance work.
  • You want someone to own the function long term.

Can you combine both?

Most small businesses do. A common pattern is one in-house generalist who briefs and reviews, with Fiverr sellers for specialist or overflow work. Our guides on Fiverr for small business and whether Fiverr is worth it for business walk through setting that up. Frequently asked questions

When is it cheaper to hire in-house than use Fiverr?
When you have steady, full-time work for one skill. If you are ordering well over $5,000 a month of design or writing from freelancers every month, a salaried hire often wins on cost and gains you someone who knows your brand. Below that, Fiverr is usually cheaper.
What hidden costs does an employee have?
Benefits, payroll taxes, equipment, software, recruiting time and management. BLS data shows benefits alone made up 30.0% of private-industry employer compensation costs in June 2026, before recruiting and tools.
What hidden costs does Fiverr have?
The 5.5% buyer service fee (plus $3.50 under $200) comes first. Some countries and US states also add sales tax or GST at checkout. Then there is your own time briefing and reviewing work. Quality varies more between sellers than between employees, so budget time for selection.
Can I try a Fiverr freelancer before hiring someone full time?
Yes, and it is a sensible test. Order a small defined project, then a larger one, and track how much work you actually have. If the monthly volume stays high, that is the data you need to justify a full-time role.
