How to leave a useful Fiverr review: public vs private ratings and what to write
Short answer
A useful Fiverr review is a short, specific account of what you ordered, what arrived and how the seller worked, left within 14 days of completion (30 in some tech and marketing categories). Buyers also get a private, anonymous rating the freelancer never sees. Rate quality, communication and value honestly, and keep personal details and threats out.
Key takeaways
- You have 14 days after an order completes to leave a public review, or 30 days in Programming & Tech and some Digital Marketing subcategories.
- A private review is an anonymous satisfaction rating the freelancer never sees, and you can submit it within 60 days of completion.
- The public review rates three things: quality of the delivery, working with the freelancer and value for money.
- Reviews go public only after both sides submit or the window closes, and you can't remove your own review once it's live.
- Fiverr bans reviews traded for discounts, freebies or refunds and removes reviews used as threats.
Reviews are the reason you could pick a good seller in the first place. Someone before you wrote “delivered layered files, fixed a typo in an hour, would hire again,” and that line did more for your decision than any star average.
Leaving a good review takes five minutes, helps the next buyer and gives honest sellers credit. This guide covers how Fiverr’s review system works, what to write and what to avoid.
How do Fiverr reviews work?
Fiverr reviews work on a two-part system: a public review that appears on the freelancer’s gig page and profile, and a private review that only Fiverr sees. Both are tied to a completed order.
| Public review | Private review | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Star rating plus written feedback | Anonymous satisfaction rating |
| Who sees it | Everyone, on the gig page and profile | Not shared with the freelancer |
| Time window | 14 days after completion (30 days in Programming & Tech and some Digital Marketing subcategories) | 60 days after completion |
| Editable | Until it goes live | Not stated |
| Freelancer can reply | Yes, after both reviews publish, no time limit | No |
Public reviews work like a blind exchange. They become visible “only after both parties submit their feedback, or once the review window closes,” and you can’t see what the freelancer wrote about you until you’ve submitted yours. That means you can be honest without worrying about retaliation in the moment.
What do you rate in a Fiverr review?
You rate three things in the public review: the quality of the delivery, what it was like working with the freelancer and the value for money. Fiverr asks each as a question.
| Fiverr’s question | What to think about |
|---|---|
| “How would you rate the quality of this delivery?” | Did it match the brief? Right file formats? Usable without rework? |
| “How was it working with the freelancer?” | Response time, clarity, handling of revisions, on-time delivery |
| “How would you rate the value for money of this service?” | Compared with the package price and what similar gigs charge |
Rate each one separately. A seller can deliver excellent work but communicate slowly, or be lovely to work with on a delivery that needed three revisions. Separate scores give the next buyer a truer picture than five stars across the board.
What makes a Fiverr review useful to other buyers?
A useful review says what you ordered, what you got and one thing you’d want the next buyer to know. Fiverr’s own guidance is to “be specific and constructive,” “focus on the service provided” and “be honest and balanced.”
Compare these two:
- Not useful: “Great seller!!! Highly recommend.”
- Useful: “Ordered the standard package for a 5-page WordPress site. Delivered on day 4 of 5, fixed two layout issues in the first revision within a day. Asked for Elementor and got it. Would use again for small sites.”
A simple formula:
- What you ordered. Package and scope, in a few words.
- What arrived. Formats, quality, whether it matched the brief.
- How it went. Timing, communication, revisions.
- Who it’s right for. “Great for simple sites; I’d look elsewhere for e-commerce.”
Three to five sentences is plenty. The next buyer is skimming, as you were.
When should you use the private review?
Use the private review for honest feedback you’d rather not post publicly, or when the public review doesn’t capture the whole story. It’s an anonymous satisfaction rating that Fiverr says “is not shared with the freelancer,” and you have 60 days after completion to submit it.
It’s the right place for things like: the work was fine but you felt pushed toward a bigger package, or the seller was great on this order but you’d hesitate on a larger one.
What should you leave out of a Fiverr review?
Leave out personal details, abuse, irrelevant comments and exaggeration. Fiverr’s review guidelines list “including personal or sensitive information,” “using offensive or abusive language,” “making irrelevant comments” and “posting misleading or exaggerated claims” as off-limits.
Fiverr also removes reviews that break its rules, including:
- Reviews that share real names, emails or phone numbers
- Profanity, hate speech or discriminatory remarks
- Reviews left as a threat “to extract more work or money”
- Content unrelated to the freelancer’s service
That last point on extortion cuts both ways. Don’t threaten a bad review to get extra work, and don’t accept a deal to change one. Fiverr prohibits “discounts, freebies, or refunds in exchange for a positive review,” along with feedback boosting and review exchanges.
What if the order went badly?
If the order went badly, fix the problem through the order first, then review what actually happened. Leaving a one-star review is not a refund mechanism, and once the order is complete, your leverage is limited.
The order is: ask for a revision within the 3-day window before auto-completion, use the Resolution Center if needed and contact Customer Support if the order is already completed. Once it’s settled, write a factual review. “Delivery missed two items from the brief; seller fixed one after a revision request” is fair and useful. Our dispute resolution guide covers the steps.
Can you change or remove a review later?
You can edit a public review from the moment you submit it until it goes live, but not after. Fiverr says “you cannot remove your own review once it has been published,” and nobody can ask you to remove yours. So take a day to check the work before you submit, especially for anything you need to test, like a website or a script.
How do reviews help you on your next order?
Reading reviews well is the flip side of writing them. When you shortlist sellers, look for recent reviews from buyers with projects like yours and for detail, not stars. Our guide on how to find good sellers on Fiverr covers what to look for, and the Fiverr Paid link search filters let you narrow the list before you start reading.
