How Fiverr payments work for buyers: fees, methods, currency and tax

Short answer

Fiverr payments work on a pay-upfront model: a buyer pays the package price at checkout, plus a service fee of 5.5% and an extra $3.50 on orders under $200, plus any sales tax. Extras and tips are paid separately with their own fee. Fiverr accepts cards, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay, bills in USD-based prices and issues an invoice for every paid order.

Key takeaways

  • You pay the full package price upfront, plus a 5.5% service fee and $3.50 more on orders under $200.
  • Extras and tips are separate payments, and each one carries its own service fee.
  • Hourly orders add a $5 order initiation fee and are charged every Monday for the hours logged.
  • Prices on Fiverr are based on USD; local-currency display can change daily and include conversion fees.
  • Fiverr issues an invoice for every paid order from Fiverr International Ltd., and taxes collected at checkout cannot be refunded.

Paying on Fiverr takes about ten seconds. Understanding what you paid, and why the number at checkout is higher than the price on the gig, takes a little longer.

This guide covers when you pay, how the fee is calculated, which methods work, how currency and tax are handled and where your money goes if an order is canceled.

When do I pay on Fiverr?

You pay at checkout, before the seller starts. For a standard gig order you pay the full package price, any extras you add and the service fee in one transaction, then submit your requirements.

Other order types pay differently:

Order typeWhen you are charged
Gig packageFull amount at checkout
Extras added laterEach extra is a separate payment
Custom offerWhen you accept the offer
TipAfter completion, within 30 days
Hourly order$5 initiation fee, then every Monday for logged hours

Fiverr’s help center says hourly funds are held in escrow until you approve the weekly report. See Fiverr hourly orders for the full cycle.

How much is the Fiverr service fee?

The buyer service fee is 5.5% of the purchase amount, plus $3.50 on orders under $200, according to Fiverr’s dedicated payments article. Fiverr’s older “How Fiverr works for clients” page still says $3.00 on orders under $100, so the help pages currently show two versions. The fee is displayed at checkout before you pay.

Order priceFee under the payments articleTotalFee under the older overview pageTotal
$50$6.25$56.25$5.75$55.75
$100$9.00$109.00$5.50$105.50
$200$11.00$211.00$11.00$211.00
$500$27.50$527.50$27.50$527.50
$2,000$110.00$2,110.00$110.00$2,110.00

Both versions agree from $200 up. The difference only affects smaller orders. Our Fiverr fees page has a calculator.

Why do extras and tips cost more than expected?

Because each separate payment carries its own fee. Fiverr’s payments article says extras paid separately each have their own fee, and its tipping article says tips are charged with the standard service fee.

On a small payment the fixed part bites. A $20 extra bought after delivery carries $1.10 plus $3.50, a $4.60 fee, or 23% of the extra. Adding the same extra at checkout folds it into the main payment. How to compare Fiverr gig packages shows how to avoid piecemeal buying.

Which payment methods does Fiverr accept?

Fiverr accepts credit and debit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Fiverr Balance, plus some local methods. Fiverr’s payment methods page lists:

MethodAvailability
Credit and debit cardsWidely available
PayPalWidely available
Apple Pay, Google PayWidely available

Venmo, PayPal CreditUS

Crypto is not accepted, and you cannot use more than one card in a single transaction.

How does currency conversion work on Fiverr?

All prices on Fiverr are based on their original US dollar price. If you browse in another currency, Fiverr’s help center says the displayed amount can change daily and can include conversion fees.

If your display currency is not supported for payment, you are charged in US dollars, and your bank or card may add its own foreign transaction fee. For larger orders, check whether your card charges a foreign transaction fee before you pay, since that cost comes on top of Fiverr’s fee.

Do I pay tax on Fiverr orders?

Depending on where you are, yes. Fiverr adds tax at checkout in a long list of countries, including US sales tax by state, Canada’s GST/HST and QST, Australia’s 10% GST, India’s 18% GST and Singapore’s 9% GST. Some countries charge only on Fiverr’s commission and fee, such as Mexico, South Africa and the UAE.

Fiverr’s help center says taxes collected are shown on your invoice and cannot be refunded. In some countries a valid tax ID changes what you are charged, so business buyers should add theirs to the billing profile before ordering. For more, see Fiverr invoices and taxes for businesses.

Does Fiverr give me an invoice?

Yes. Fiverr says it automatically issues an invoice for every paid order, downloadable from desktop, and you can add your business details and tax ID. Invoices are issued by Fiverr International Ltd., 8 Kaplan Street, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Add your company name and tax ID before your first order so every invoice carries them from the start.

What happens to my money if an order is canceled?

It goes to your Fiverr Balance by default. Fiverr’s refunds article says canceled funds are credited to your balance, and its client FAQ says the original order amount and service fee appear there for future orders.

You can request a refund to your original payment method with the “Request a Refund” button. Fiverr says this can take up to 10 days and fails if the payment is more than 180 days old or the method is inactive. Fiverr Credits cannot be refunded and expire after three months. Whether the service fee also returns on a card refund is not stated in the refunds article. Fiverr refunds and cancellations covers the whole process.

How does paying on Fiverr Pro differ?

Fiverr Pro keeps the same checkout for orders but adds business options. Wire transfer is only available to Pro clients, and the Pro Advanced plan, at $129 per month plus tax, adds deferred or monthly payments based on eligibility and custom invoice reports.

Fiverr’s help center says the Advanced subscription cannot be paid with Fiverr credits or your existing Fiverr balance. For teams that need consolidated billing, Fiverr Pro is worth a look. See the full Fiverr Pro guide.

Is it safe to pay through Fiverr?

Paying through Fiverr is the safe option, and paying outside it is where buyers get hurt. Fiverr’s off-platform policy says that if something goes wrong while working on the platform, Fiverr can step in, and that off-platform activity exposes users to scams it cannot protect against.

Fiverr also says it will never ask for your login credentials or payment info in a message. Any request to pay by bank transfer, crypto or a link outside Fiverr is a scam signal.

With the numbers clear, you can budget a first order with confidence.
