Merch design is cheap on Fiverr, and fast. The part that costs buyers money later is the file. A great design drawn in twelve gradient colors is expensive to screen print, blurry on a DTG shirt if it is low resolution and impossible to embroider. Decide how it will be printed before anyone draws a line.

How much does a t-shirt designer cost on Fiverr?

Across the 42 well-reviewed gigs (4.7 stars or better, 20+ reviews) on the first page of Fiverr’s t-shirt design category on September 29, 2026, the median starting price was $30 and the middle half ran from $15 to $46.25. Starting prices ranged from $5 to $125. These are the prices of each gig’s cheapest package, not the cost of a finished, print-ready merch set.

The $30 starting package usually buys one text-based or simple graphic design as a PNG. Prices rise with detailed illustration, vector source files, color separations for screen printing, commercial rights, front and back designs and mockups on the actual garment.

Package tierTypical priceWhat it usually includes
Basic$15 to $351 typography or simple graphic design, transparent PNG, 1-2 revisions
Standard$35 to $70Illustrated design, vector file (AI, EPS or SVG), mockup, commercial use, 3 revisions
Premium$70 to $120Detailed illustration, front and back, screen-print color separations, source files, several colorways

A single $30 design costs $35.15 at checkout, because Fiverr’s payments article lists 5.5% plus $3.50 on orders under $200. If you need a small collection, one custom offer for five designs at $100 comes to $109, so you pay the fixed fee once. The Fiverr fees guide explains the rest.

Marketplace or Fiverr Pro for merch design?

The marketplace wins here. Only 2 of the 42 gigs in the sample carried the Fiverr Pro badge, and nearly half (48%) came from Top Rated sellers, so experienced merch designers are easy to find at marketplace prices.

Look beyond a single gig only if merch is part of a brand launch, such as a clothing label with a logo, hang tags and packaging. Then start with the logo design guide or a brand identity designer, so the shirts, labels and store all match.

How do you read a t-shirt design gig before ordering?

  • Print method. Screen printing charges per color, so designs need a few flat spot colors. DTG and DTF handle full color and gradients. Embroidery needs bold shapes and a separate stitch file.
  • File formats. For screen print, you want vector (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF). For DTG and print-on-demand, a transparent PNG at print size, usually 300 DPI.
  • Commercial rights. If you plan to sell the shirts, the package or an extra must say commercial use.
  • Original work. Many cheap gigs rework clip art or stock vectors. Ask if the illustration is drawn from scratch.
  • Mockups. A mockup on the right garment color shows how the ink reads on dark fabric. Ask for one if you print on black or navy.
  • Style range. Merch designers are often specialists: vintage, streetwear, cartoon, typography. Pick the style, then the seller.

With your print method decided, compare t-shirt designers on Fiverr on these points.

What should you put in a t-shirt design brief?

Paste this into the requirements form:

  • What the shirt is for: a brand, an event, a team, a print-on-demand store
  • Print method and printer or print-on-demand service, with their file specs
  • Garment colors the design must work on (white, black, heather gray)
  • Text exactly as it should appear, with spelling checked
  • Style: vintage, minimalist, streetwear, cartoon, hand-lettered
  • Maximum number of ink colors if screen printing
  • Print placement and size: front center, left chest, full back, sleeve
  • Three shirt designs you like and why
  • Rights: commercial use, and whether you need the source files
  • Files needed: vector file, transparent PNG at print size, mockup

The brief writing guide has a general template you can adapt.

What are the red flags in t-shirt design gigs?

  • Famous characters, logos or sports teams in the gallery. Using them on shirts you sell invites takedowns and claims, and it says something about the seller’s judgment.
  • The same clip art in several gallery designs. Expect your design to share elements with other buyers’ shirts.
  • Low-resolution PNGs only. A 1,000-pixel file prints soft on a full-front design.
  • Gradients and photo effects offered for screen print. They need halftones and extra colors, which raise print costs.
  • Commercial rights missing from every tier. Ask before ordering, not when your store launches.
  • AI output with no editing. Fiverr’s AI guidelines say generic, unmodified AI output does not meet its quality standards, and you can state “no AI” clearly in your brief.

What should you check when the files arrive?

Check the files before accepting. Fiverr auto-completes orders three days after delivery, and you ask for changes with “No, I’m not ready yet” on the order page.

CheckWhat good looks like
ResolutionPNG sized for the print area, sharp at 100% zoom
BackgroundTransparent, with no stray white pixels around edges
VectorOpens in Illustrator, Inkscape or Affinity and scales cleanly
ColorsSpot colors named or counted for screen print
TextSpelling checked, fonts outlined
RightsCommercial use stated in the package or order

Upload the PNG to your print-on-demand preview or send it to your printer before the order completes. It is the fastest way to catch a file problem.

Frequently asked questions

What file does a t-shirt printer need?
For screen printing, a vector file (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF) with a limited number of spot colors. For DTG or DTF printing, a transparent PNG at print size, usually at 300 DPI. Ask your printer or print-on-demand service for their exact spec.
Can a Fiverr designer make a design for embroidery?
They can design one that suits embroidery, with bold shapes and few colors, but turning it into a stitch file is called digitizing and is a separate service. Ask whether the gig includes a DST or similar stitch file before you order.
Can I sell the shirts with the design on them?
Only if the package grants commercial use. Many t-shirt gigs list commercial rights as an extra, so check the package table and ask the seller to confirm in the order chat.
Can I ask for a design with a famous character or brand logo?
You should not. Using someone else's characters, logos or lyrics on merch you sell can lead to takedowns or legal claims. A good designer will steer you toward an original idea.
