Hiring a virtual assistant is less like buying a deliverable and more like making a small hire. The price is low, the tasks are varied and the risk sits in two places: whether the assistant follows instructions without supervision, and what access you hand over. Get those two right and a Fiverr VA can take hours off your week.

How much does a virtual assistant cost on Fiverr?

Across the 35 well-reviewed gigs (4.7 stars or better, 20+ reviews) on the first page of Fiverr’s virtual assistant category on September 29, 2026, the median starting price was $10 and the middle half ran from $5 to $35. The range ran from $5 to $160. These are starting prices of each gig’s cheapest package, which is usually one hour or one small task, not a month of support.

The typical range for ongoing work is $5 to $30 an hour. What pushes the rate up is skill with specific tools, English or multilingual writing for customer-facing work and time-zone overlap with your business hours.

The fixed fee matters here. On a $10 task, Fiverr’s service fee of 5.5% plus $3.50 brings checkout to $14.05, a 40% markup. Batch small tasks into one order of $50 or more and the fee’s share drops fast. The fees guide shows the math.

Should you hire a VA by the task or by the hour?

Hire by the task for your first order, then move to hourly work if the tasks are ongoing and unpredictable. Fiverr’s hourly orders are built for that: the assistant logs hours, you approve a weekly report and payment sits in escrow until you do.

The rules are specific. Hourly orders carry a $5 order initiation fee, need a minimum estimate of 8 hours, bill every Monday for the hours logged the previous week and are open only to freelancers at Level One and above. Marketplace or Fiverr Pro for a virtual assistant?

The marketplace is where almost all VA hiring happens; only 2 of the 35 gigs in our sample were Pro. The bigger issue is that just 6% were Top Rated, tied with data entry for the lowest share of any category we checked. That does not mean the assistants are poor, but it means the level badge tells you less, and a paid trial tells you more.

Six checks before you order.

• What one unit is. An hour, a task or a number of items. “$10” means nothing until you know which.
• Tools named. Gmail, Outlook, Google Workspace, Notion, Trello, Asana, HubSpot, Shopify. Look for yours.
• Time zone and availability. When will they reply, and do they overlap with your working hours?
• Written English sample. For customer-facing work, read their gig description and replies closely.
• Response time on the profile. A VA who takes a day to reply to a pre-order message will take a day to reply during work.
• Reviews mentioning ongoing work, not just one-off tasks.

What should you put in a virtual assistant brief?

Write this as a short standard operating procedure. It becomes your onboarding document.

• The tasks, as a numbered list, with how often each happens
• What “done” looks like for each task (a filled sheet, an empty inbox folder, a scheduled post)
• Tools they will use and how you will grant access (team invite, delegated inbox, shared folder)
• Rules: what they may reply to, what they must escalate, what they must never do
• Working hours and response time you expect
• Weekly hour limit and reporting format

Keep account security simple: give each tool its own limited login, never type passwords into messages and remove access when the work ends. Fiverr itself says it will never ask for your login or payment details, and it advises against sharing sensitive personal data in chat.

What are the red flags on virtual assistant gigs?

• A $5 gig promising “any task, unlimited”. You will get the fastest version of every task.
• Requests for your main email password or banking login.
• Pressure to switch to WhatsApp, Telegram or direct payment before ordering. Fiverr permits third-party tools only after an order is placed, and off-platform work is not protected.
• No questions about your tools or process before quoting.
• Hours logged with no description of what was done.
